The meaning of life

Since the dawn of time, the ultimate question has been asked in a number of ways. Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is the origin of the universe? How does the world exist, and what is its origin or source of creation? Why is there something rather than nothing?

This site offers you the possibility to discuss this fundamental metaphysical question with others. It also allows you to share your opinion and react to other people's points of view. What do you believe in? What do you think is the meaning of life?

Whether you are a believer, an atheist, an agnostic, or a clever mix of all three, you are welcome! Your point of view can be serious, absurd, even bordering on completely nuts. However, the following two things are essential to this dialogue: respect and an open mind.

Respect: you may defend your opinion and try to prove the falsity of another, but it is forbidden to attack its author directly. Fascism and generalisations are strictly verboten!

An open mind: if you can't handle having your convictions being put into question, this might not be the place for you. For this same reason, a sense of humour is highly recommended! If your beliefs forbid their being made fun of, you might not want to participate in this dialogue.

You don't have to register in order to be able to comment or to start a new thread. We do, however, highly recommend that you register. By doing this, you can easily look up everything you've posted and, if you like, modify it. You'll also be able to track new threads and new comments.

We have all given thought to such questions like these as to how we came to be alive or how we all came from one single organism the mind is something that will always question everything it is our nature to question thing everyone and even ourselves perhaps if we let things be the answer will fall into place but of course we won’t ever stop searching for such answers i believe that if you live in search for this you will not bare life and if you were able to accomplish the findings of theses questions you would be devastated with what you come across I mean think about it if we were to know the answers to all the great questions in the world what would be the point perhaps what im trying to say is rather difficult to comprehend or maybe im just speaking randomness but one thing I know for sure I believe that life should just be lived with believing in nothing but yourself and questioning nothing but what you do and why you do it …I live for one thing ever since I was little I lived to be loved and love that is my one and only value "for to live life without love is to not live at all" … that’s the answer to all my questions ….but hey im still young ill figure out what I want to figure out …im 17 years young :D “AJG”

Nice big sentence. Get used to use punctuation :)

The value of an answer depends on the practical use of it. The ultimate questions of life, the universe, and everything play a fundamental role in our beliefs, thinking habits, and in our whole life. So answering such questions does matter. It is more likely that the answers give something to our lives than that they take something away from it.
In case of understanding, it's better to be curious of the truth than to be satisfied with lies.
However, in case of personal satisfaction and good feelings, it's better to be satisfied with lies that are believed to be true.
It's a matter of individual choice whether one pursues the truth or accepts something that may be lie - whether one wants to be right or happy.

I dont always try to be the mediator but i think your both on to somthing. I think its very important to look for answers because theres larger forces at work than ourselves. If we embrace it, love is all around us. Whether its the love you find in family, friends, expression, a partner, or just how beautiful the world is. Alex, you say you only live by love? I think thats awsome! Love can be a philosophy, a relegeon, and something to live by and for. I think its powerful and pure enough.

First, sorry for the long answer: everyone wants a short answer – but not a short life.

Here's an objective answer is based on modern science that reconciles with ancient scriptures and spiritual writings…

Science is beginning to reveal that - while there are many meanings including finding food, water and shelter to simply stay alive, to rearing offspring to mentally learning things to help achieve this - there is one fundamental purpose underlying all these.

At its most fundamental level we know that everything, yes absolutely everything you see and experience is made of energy - and everything is ultimately the result of this energy, its flow and interaction. Scientists such as Schneider and Sagan have shown how the flow of energy created life.

Energy is integral to life, to your life. Every moment of your existence your body works to keep energy flowing. Every second you breathe air, you add food and water to replace the energy you use. Everything you sense or do is connected to the flow of energy in one form or another. You are so used to this energy flow that you hardly notice it. It is the ultimate process of your life. If your energy stops flowing you die: flowing energy differentiates living creatures from dead ones.

Still not sure – consider how you are physically composed of 25 or so chemicals – just like everyone else. So how are you different? While all our chemicals might be the same, the energy mixed with them is different in each of us. For example, while we all have bodies with similar brains with a similar number of nerves in each, the way those nerves are connected is different in each of us. The experiences, learnings and resulting nerve connections are unique and are what makes you whom you are, makes your character and personality. Science can’t specifically tell us precisely how your character and personality works, but you know you have one that stares at us from the mirror each day. Your character cannot be easily seen, even described or its location pinpointed in scientific terms, but it exists - through the interaction of energy. As such, a major part of you is energy, in particular how your energy flows and balances.

Whatever you believe, whether you agree with the science or not energy is integral to life. Yet few of us ever consider this and the difference that in doing so can make to your life – and how it can explain the meaning of your life.

Science is beginning to show how. It shows that energy has at least three purposes and associated meanings:
• Conveying and exchanging information,
• Enabling change,
• Doing work.

Do these laws of energy similarly suggest that a meaning of your life is to find and convey information and then use it to bring about change through some sort of work? Is this science echoing those scriptures that suggest your soul perfect itself, live a good life, attain higher states and be perfected in every dimension?

How to do this varies for everyone. Therefore, everyone—you included—has a slightly different meaning to someone else.

What does your energy enable you to do best? This can be as simple as determining what you are truly passionate about or what you do better than anyone else. Unfortunately, many of us are not. As such, the individual meaning of your life is for you to discover what makes your energy flow best within you.

In short, your individual meaning in life is determining how your energies flow best together and balance—and then continue to perfect this.

Energy is only worth anything when guided by information. Energy without information is a potentially destructive thing. Only information makes it creative.

The amount and quality of information bound to energy regulates the "purpose" of energy. It is always on a chaos-order scale, and it has a certain degree of coherency. The largest coherency is the optimum between the two extremities: the chaos and the order. This coherency is material existence (but possibly not only that). There is a certain degree of coherency in all your life - including your environment, your events, your body, your organs, cells, etc. All of them function with a certain degree of coherency, and the best way of life is when you maintain the largest possible coherency.
When coherency decreases then illness appears, health degenerates, and when coherency reaches a certain minimum then the things, events, organs, etc. cease to exist.

However, this doesn't tell anything about the ultimate meaning of life, or about the purpose of existence. If you want, you can choose the attainment of highest coherency as the ultimate goal of your life. But this is not fundamental in the universe. It's only vital for yourself.

it is interesting that the original comment said that his life is about being love and giving love since that is jesus' message. i am an agnostic. but it is interesting neverless that the ultimate values and meaning which we give ourselves, things that makes so much sense to us and are built in and intrinsic to us, well, they point to something bigger, and something which we can access, although not fully understand. this excites me. a friend once said to me, it's not what the meaning of life is, it's about the things that bring you meaning. perhaps the things that bring us meaning point to the meaning of life...hmmmm. food for thought.

Jesus' message is fine, it's the hating-on-others part of his religion that everybody dislikes.
