The meaning of life

Since the dawn of time, the ultimate question has been asked in a number of ways. Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is the origin of the universe? How does the world exist, and what is its origin or source of creation? Why is there something rather than nothing?

This site offers you the possibility to discuss this fundamental metaphysical question with others. It also allows you to share your opinion and react to other people's points of view. What do you believe in? What do you think is the meaning of life?

Whether you are a believer, an atheist, an agnostic, or a clever mix of all three, you are welcome! Your point of view can be serious, absurd, even bordering on completely nuts. However, the following two things are essential to this dialogue: respect and an open mind.

Respect: you may defend your opinion and try to prove the falsity of another, but it is forbidden to attack its author directly. Fascism and generalisations are strictly verboten!

An open mind: if you can't handle having your convictions being put into question, this might not be the place for you. For this same reason, a sense of humour is highly recommended! If your beliefs forbid their being made fun of, you might not want to participate in this dialogue.

You don't have to register in order to be able to comment or to start a new thread. We do, however, highly recommend that you register. By doing this, you can easily look up everything you've posted and, if you like, modify it. You'll also be able to track new threads and new comments.

Why do we continue to have children knowing that we don't have any idea what we're doing here ourselves? Why put more people in the same mindless situation that we're in?

It just doesn't make sense, we have the power to control ourselves from fucking and having kids...but we don't. I find that to be very selfish, not to mention all the unfortunate children who don't even have parents to take care of them..

Are we just fucking machines with no purpose? Bacteria whose only purpose is to reproduce?

Having children may have a purpose for the parents, you know. You talk about having children as it would be some sort of sickness of an adult.
In many cases, many families, children represent something like a "last hope" for the parents to eventually become a part of the history of mankind in a manner as they dreamed it. Thus, they try to 'force' their children to reach something very big, thus their own live would become worthy through their children's life.

Lots of people think this. On the other hand, there are those who don't have any purpose with a child, they are simply too irresponsible. These are the people who usually drink too much, live an unhealthy live, have no perspective at all. They're also not sexmachines, they're just addicted to their desires so much that they are unable to reach anything valuable because of the addictions. Thus, although they have children, they can't give any valuable meaning to their own (or their children's) lives.

I think having a child is a very nice thing, although I completely agree that we shouldn't be so enthusiastic about this until we don't have any idea of what we are doing here.

In my opinion, a lot of people want children because it gives them the feeling that they will continue to live forever. They are afraid of death.

We're currently living on a planet with wars, with poverty, and I do not think this world could be seen as a gift for a new born child. I think most of the people want to have children for them, for egoist reasons, not for the happiness of the children.

TO LOL:
Surprising. I used to have the same thoughts. I have always considered humans to be some sort of dinosaurs. Why the hell should we make children who will have to live in this mad world!? But...as grew older I changed my mind. Having children is the most natural thing in the world and it is the thing that makes us what we are. As far as I can see you are on this world only because your parents wanted so.
My advice is... try to think in positive way even if bombs are exploding over your head.

Like think of the beauty of engineering which made the bomb possible? :)

I agree with smallBang because he shares my point. However, on the other hand if you are raised in a positive environment by the right people one can have a positive impact on other people's lives and even the world. Perhaps you may even be born as a brilliant physicist or cosmologist and find a way to inhabit other suitable planets. Although, until we find the answer it really amounts to nothing...if there is an answer anyways.

It's like we're born soldiers, not literally of course, into a world of uncertainty whose purpose is to struggle to find the meaning of life. I believe that this search that we find ourselves on is our purpose for now until of course someone finds irrefutable evidence to back up his or her idea of why we're here. The meaning of life for now is essentially the search for a meaning.

Good luck soldiers. :D
