The meaning of life

Since the dawn of time, the ultimate question has been asked in a number of ways. Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is the origin of the universe? How does the world exist, and what is its origin or source of creation? Why is there something rather than nothing?

This site offers you the possibility to discuss this fundamental metaphysical question with others. It also allows you to share your opinion and react to other people's points of view. What do you believe in? What do you think is the meaning of life?

Whether you are a believer, an atheist, an agnostic, or a clever mix of all three, you are welcome! Your point of view can be serious, absurd, even bordering on completely nuts. However, the following two things are essential to this dialogue: respect and an open mind.

Respect: you may defend your opinion and try to prove the falsity of another, but it is forbidden to attack its author directly. Fascism and generalisations are strictly verboten!

An open mind: if you can't handle having your convictions being put into question, this might not be the place for you. For this same reason, a sense of humour is highly recommended! If your beliefs forbid their being made fun of, you might not want to participate in this dialogue.

I am very sorry to give you a disappointment. The answer to the "ultimate" question is that there is no answer.

Does this mean that there is no hope, there is no joy, there is no point in living. No! All this means is that if you spend your life looking for an answer, you will not have a meaningful life.

The only way to really live a meaningful life is to understand that there is no meaning of life. This sounds like a paradox, but life is a paradox.

If you try really hard to get something you lose it. Only if you let go and stop being obsessed about trying to find happiness, fulfillment, love or "the answer to the ultimate question" you will find what you were actually looking for.

Stop trying to understand life. Start to live it. How do you know that you have finally achieved this goal? It is simple: Think that you are going to die tomorrow. What are the things you regret the most? What are the things that you left undone. What didn't you say to your loved ones that they deserve to hear? What did you do wrong that needs to be corrected, before you are ready to go?

Remember, there is no meaning! Life is more or less a sequence of random events. If you think you can control this chaos you are doomed to anxiety and depression. For a while, it might seem to work. But you are fooled! It is not your wonderful capability to control your little petty life. You just got lucky! It is just a matter of time that your carefully built house of cards that you call your life will be destroyed. You are building your life on an illusion.

If you still think you are in control you are living in a sealed bottle. You are not actually living at all. You have built a strong protective wall between your little meaningless life and the world. Try to break free! You will get hurt, you might even die. But you might also experience real life. It is out there, but your fear of death and obsession of control is preventing you from living it. The larger life is also meaningless, but you might get surprised!

Most people desperately want to believe there is some god or fate or some other higher being that controls this all. There is none!

This is the ultimate source of hope: you can't control life. There is no god that can control life. Don't try to be a god. To believe you can control life is like an atom trying to control the universe.

So again: stop living in an illusion. Accept the fact that you can't control. You don't have to. Just live your life in a way that any moment you are ready to let it go. Accept death and you may actually begin your life!

However, what you did here, you stated that there is no ultimate answer, no god, no meaning, etc., and you did not prove anything at all, and then you described what life is IF these statement are true. But again, you forgot to prove that they're true.

No one can prove it, Pathfinder. Nothing can be truly proven, only believed. Something that is true in your eyes is simply a belief that is so strong, you have no doubt of its truth. But you could be wrong.
Who are we, to claim we can separate truth from lies? Fantasy from reality? Who is anyone, God or mortal, human or other, to claim such a thing? And even if they truly believed that they knew the truth... they could still be wrong.
So, please don't ask for proof. Ask for evidence. Ask what makes the person believe what they say is true. But please, don't, do not ask them to prove it as truth.

The evidence is in the eyewitness accounts of the God man. Look at the gospels which is without a doubt eye witness testimony and you will find the meaning of life. It definitely has one. You are either a vessel of honour or dishonour. Heaven or Hell.

Very extreme, Heaven and H-E-double hockey sticks, yes no?
While I do agree with "ask for evidence" I do not agree with such broad lines as "honor and dishonor" and "Heaven and Hell." It is very extreme. So, if you weren't the kindest person you could have been in about one hundred or so years of life on earth, you are doomed to eternal damnation and fire, for acts nowhere near as "evil" as humans, or anyone (extraterrestrials if there are any) can get. Not fair to the damned. And it is not "without a doubt." I doubt, and most certainly so will Path.

Doubt makes it harder to believe but it doesn't mean that you become more evil... The two has nothing to do with each other, evilness can occur in faithful people too.

I agree. The first part is what I was trying to say.

Why are you so good at stuff like this Path?

I don't think I'm better than anyone, I just probably use my brain more :)
I see the futility of theories based on beliefs, thus I try to find scientific explanations which are unreachable without keeping up the possibility that everything might be wrong, or that there is no sense to ask anything.
The only way we can figure out any kind of truth is logical, based on deterministic laws of nature, and it has to start with the assumption that everything we've ever learned is false.
However, sooner or later we may find, as Heisenberg did, that there are levels of reality where uncertainty cannot be avoided. Thus we find that the fundamental laws of the universe cannot be described by states of the world, only by processes which connect emerging new states with previous ones. Then again, it is still not quite sure for me whether this uncertainty occurs in the measuring process or in reality itself.

Describing something with its processes instead of states is like describing a particle's position with a wave function. Pretty complex if you ask me. However, if this turns out to be the solution to find the true nature of nature then this is the way we have to walk on. We cannot say that "this is too complex, I don't want the truth to be like this, so I say that truth is something else what is more simple".
We have to decide whether we want to know the truth or we want our views to be true.
