The meaning of life

Since the dawn of time, the ultimate question has been asked in a number of ways. Why do we exist? What is the meaning of life? Does God exist? What is the origin of the universe? How does the world exist, and what is its origin or source of creation? Why is there something rather than nothing?

This site offers you the possibility to discuss this fundamental metaphysical question with others. It also allows you to share your opinion and react to other people's points of view. What do you believe in? What do you think is the meaning of life?

Whether you are a believer, an atheist, an agnostic, or a clever mix of all three, you are welcome! Your point of view can be serious, absurd, even bordering on completely nuts. However, the following two things are essential to this dialogue: respect and an open mind.

Respect: you may defend your opinion and try to prove the falsity of another, but it is forbidden to attack its author directly. Fascism and generalisations are strictly verboten!

An open mind: if you can't handle having your convictions being put into question, this might not be the place for you. For this same reason, a sense of humour is highly recommended! If your beliefs forbid their being made fun of, you might not want to participate in this dialogue.

You don't have to register in order to be able to comment or to start a new thread. We do, however, highly recommend that you register. By doing this, you can easily look up everything you've posted and, if you like, modify it. You'll also be able to track new threads and new comments.

I agree with you, on both points, but I am just wondering what led you to this conclusion.

Woah, woah, woah. 906767, there's no need to attack anyone. Don't make assumptions about someone based on their response. I don't necessarily agree that there's no god or meaning of life, but I don't know what prompted tttttttttttttt to say that. It could be that they're just trying to be obnoxious or funny, or it could be what they actually believe. Sometimes, when I'm in too deep and depressed, I say the same thing. Even when I bounce back and start to think clearly, I can't generally bring myself to question the purpose of life on a whole. During down times, I can only focus on the reasons for MY life. I don't know how they're reasons for life, but I think of all the things and people who mean so much to me just in little ways. I feel that, even though I don't know where my life is going or why things happen, there's a reason for living. I may be self-obsessed for thinking like this, but it's either focus on that or have the same opinion as tttttttttttt.

God DOES exist. He's male nor femal, animal, insect, etc. Gods a spirit who is in heaven with Christ and passed away beleivers. Yah the world created itself. Bull. God created the earth in 7 days and takes lifes when theyre are nescessary. We did not come from monkeys, monkeys are animals in zoos flinging poop at each other. First was the pre-historic dinosaurs and cavemen, then comes God's son; Jesus Christ. He sacrficed his life to bless us and forgive us for our sins. Then the generation passed and here we our.
Evelution is false, and EVERYBODY has a chance to experience Christ and his willings. They have churches for Christ, but no house/meeting locations for people that beleive we came from nothing. How can a highly advanced human being, filled with blood, a pumping heart, a stomache, and a waste proccess come from anything and everything else but GOD.
It all makes since, READ THE BIBLE AND BELEIVE.

Do not be judgemental on people who do not believe God exists. Rather teach them that He do exist.

I don't really get this, why do many people think that if God wouldn't exist then life would have no meaning?

Hmm, I still don't see how this proves that God exists. Monkeys are actually extremely intelligent, perhaps one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. Whales are also quite smart; and ants actually have society and cooperation, you would be amazed if you read some of the things they do. Where did you come up with the idea that humans are God's chosen creatures? Before we came along, who was the most intelligent species? Monkeys, whales, or whatever, makes no difference; the question is, did they think they were God's chosen creatures, at the time? And would that mean we are only one highly advanced creature in a long list of "chosen ones?" In 5 thousand years (if the planet lives that long), will there be a new species? When their scientists suggest that they evolved from us, will they deny it? They might say, "No way, I didn't evolve from a bomb-flinging human!"

I'm not sure that's what tttttttt meant, I think perhaps he was just making two different points, but grouped them together. I could be wrong, of course. But I too do not believe God exists, and do not believe there is a meaning to life - however, one conclusion did not lead to the other - they are completely separate.

I think the most important thing you can do while discussing this sort of topic is to keep an open mind. None of us can say who's wrong or right, whe'll find out in the end. Either we'll go someplace else or cease to exist or whatever. But as we live in this existance we must remember our own beliefs arent the only reasonable justification as to why we are here. Personaly I believe that we have been created by something greater, because I think, walk, breathe, and most importantly, feel.

Hey guys,
I'm a Christian, and I think it's important to share my faith without being aggressive about it. I just want to present you with Pascal's wager: If you are right and there is no God, when you and I die that'll be the end of it. However, if I am right and there is a God, you have everything to lose. Why take that chance? I plead with everyone to read the Bible and come to know God's saving grace. Don't brush Christians aside as ignorant or deluded, and certainly never think faith and science are incompatible. Just look at Isaac Newton, Francis Bacon, Robert Boyle, James Simpson... all God-fearing scientists. Guys I know what life is like without God, I tried to fill it with things that brought me temporary enjoyment, but was always left with that deep void, you know? But now I know real, lasting joy through Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Jesus came so that we may have life to the full, and I pray that you will come to accept Him and starting to realise the true meaning of life. God Bless you all.

Following this way of thinking, you should believe in Allah too.

Pascal obviously didn't consider reincarnation as a third alternative.

Btw, god-fearing and science are not really symbiotic. If you think about it more deeply, you will find that none of these scientists' work actually opposed the teachings of the Church. But, for instance, Galilei's and Copernicus's scientific works opposed the Church, and we know that they were forced to withdraw their teachings. This means that indeed they needed to choose between science and religion. Of course, we can say that this is just an opposition with the Church, and not with God, however, fearing God means actually to fear the teachings surrounding God's concept, which are based on the Church's ideas about God and the world.

I asked God to take me with him. Why does he elude us, why does he hide? What is the purpose, what is my purpose? The bible was written thousands of years ago, a distant time and place, and yet we are expected to blindly believe that there is a God, a God that loves us, looks after us, hurts when we hurt, smiles when we smile. Why can I not see you, feel you. I need to know that you still care, I need to know that you exist. Ancient words on a manuscript are no longer enough, how do I know that you have not given up on us. Have you abandoned us? Am I wrong to want this? Are you angry that I ask, that I wonder? I don`t blame you for what is happening on earth, I blame ourselves. But I would love to feel you, feel your essence, your comfort, your love. Can you take me with you? Can you show me why I should continue living? Help me find my purpose in life so that I may not disappoint you. Help me find reason to live beyond simply living for myself.

What is the purpose, what is my purpose?
I need to know that you still care, I need to know that you exist.

You will never know these things. You might believe in them, if you are willing to observe and interpret your experiences within this context. But you will never know it for sure.

Your purpose in life is not something God gives you - even if God exists, he doesn't determine your goals, for he created you with free will. So the choice is yours.

All I know is that the guideline God gave us (assuming that He is our creator) is conscience. If you listen to that, your soul, which is the same as the universal spirit of God, then you will find your way - a way which is to God's liking.

I blame ourselves.
Can you take me with you?

If God is the ultimate creator, the first and only "thing" in existence, then everything what exists today exists in God, and everyone who lives today lives within God. So asking whether he could take you with him makes no sense - you are already within him.

There is no need to blame anyone for anything. All answers are within us.

I wondered when i first read this whether this is in fact a good reason to believe in God. I come from a christian society and I know all about religion, and have heard many and varied reason for believing in god, but I don't think that this is justifiable. I don't mean to attack your religion, but to believe in something, or even to do something that means so much in your life, just to be sure? just to be on the safe side? I think that that is sad. If you believed because you seriously thought that god existed, or because your family does, and that was how your were brought up, I would understand.

How about my wager: If you are right and there is a God, when I die I will go to Hell. However, if I am right and there is no God, then you will have spent your one and only existence limiting yourself to appease somebody that doesn't exist. Why take that chance?

So really you're risking yourself either way. Besides, people shouldn't love God because they're afraid of Hell. They should love God for God.

That said, I don't think he exists.
